recovering ms publisher corrupted files

I wished to recover some ms publisher files which had been deleted. A company retreived the files but it seems that such software treats any .PUB files as being Corel Ventura.pub!
Ventura will not recognise them and neither does MS Publisher.Your software could not produce readable text either.Do you have any advice
I hope this is a one-off excercise!
